A brief look through history shows that almost anything Italians do, they do it with absolute passion and dedication. While our neighbors in France might have the language of love, we feel that our culture embodies it, ensuring that when it comes to celebrating love through marriage, there probably aren’t any places that do it as well as Italy!
What sets traditional Italian weddings apart from the rest?
But what is it exactly that sets Italy apart from everyone else?
It’s the way Italy weaves together centuries of history, breathtaking beauty, and a deep-seated passion for life, love, and celebration. From its romantic landscapes—rolling hills, sparkling coastlines, and charming villages—to its rich traditions and unparalleled hospitality, Italy offers something truly extraordinary. Here, every detail is infused with artistry, whether it’s the architecture of a centuries-old villa, the flavors of a meticulously crafted meal, or the warm embrace of its people. When it comes to weddings, Italy doesn’t just host the celebration—it transforms it into an unforgettable experience steeped in elegance, romance, and timeless charm.
What food is served at an Italian wedding?
Choosing food for your wedding already requires meticulous planning, but choosing among the endless list of Italian delicacies is an exquisite endeavor of a different kind. Before the sit-down meal starts, guests are treated to an apertivo and some finger food, allowing them to mingle.
Once seated, guests will typically have an antipasto (appetizers), followed by the primo (starter plate of pasta or risotto), and then the secondo (main dish of either meat or fish) together with contorni (sides). It’s good to know how menus work at Italian weddings, with wines paired to the different dishes being served, and each course served a few minutes after the other.
Traditional Italian wedding venues
Location is a critical part of any wedding, but ensuring your choice of venue matches with your vision takes on increased importance if it’s a traditional Italian wedding you’re after. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of options, with villas, castles, and vineyards all fitting the bill supremely.

Traditional Italian wedding cake and dance
It won’t come as a great surprise, but once the meal is done, it’s time to cut the cake—though it’s worth noting that there will be plenty of speeches made in between. In terms of the cake, if you’re a stickler for tradition, then it’s the millefoglie (similar to the French millefeuille) that you should be going for. That being said, wedding couples are encouraged to pick the cake they prefer and that they feel suits the occasion.
Other desserts are also served, including various Italian cakes, pastries, and sweets to choose from. After that, the happy couple have their dance, before opening up the dance floor to the guests to dance the night away!
